Something a little different, exploring my home city of Liverpool.
If your mind automatically jumps to airports, long‑haul flights and far‑flung beaches when you think about your next break, it might be time to look a little closer to home. One of the UK’s most vibrant, character‑packed cities is right on our doorstep: Liverpool. Bursting with history, music, food and nightlife, it is perfect for a weekend escape that feels special without needing a passport.
Whether you are planning a couples’ escape, a friends’ weekend or a solo city break, Liverpool delivers that “holiday feeling” in spades.
Ferry across the Mersey: a classic start
You cannot talk about Liverpool without mentioning the famous ferry across the Mersey. It is the perfect way to get your bearings and see the city skyline from the water. As you glide along the river you will spot the Three Graces, the Royal Liver Building and the Albert Dock, all while hearing a little about the city’s rich maritime history.
For clients, I love to suggest starting the trip with the ferry: it sets the tone beautifully and feels instantly “iconic”.
Move your body at Ryde Studios
For those who like to keep active while they are away, or simply fancy trying something new, a visit to Ryde Studios is a fantastic addition to your Liverpool itinerary.
Here you can drop into:
Energising spin classes to start the day on a high
Graceful barre sessions that strengthen and lengthen
Restorative pilates for core strength and mobility
Envigorating yoga to unwind after a busy day exploring
It is a brilliant way to balance out the cocktails, street food and indulgent dinners, and it gives the trip a little “wellness city break” twist. I can suggest how best to fit a class into your schedule so it complements, rather than interrupts, your sightseeing.
Walk through music history at The Beatles Story
Liverpool is, of course, the home of the Fab Four. A visit to The Beatles Story exhibition at the Albert Dock is a must for Beatles fans and even those who only know the big hits. Immersive exhibits, original memorabilia and atmospheric reconstructions of key moments in their career bring their story to life. It is easy to spend a couple of hours here, then continue the music theme with a drink at the Cavern Quarter afterwards.
The Albert Dock: culture, coffee and cobbles
The red‑brick warehouses of Royal Albert Dock are now home to galleries, independent shops, bars and restaurants. It is one of those places where you can happily wander, stop for a coffee with a waterfront view, pop into a museum, then linger over cocktails as the sun goes down.
You might:
Explore one of the city’s excellent museums or galleries
Browse design stores and boutiques
Enjoy sunset drinks overlooking the water
It is also a lovely area to base yourself nearby, as it keeps you close to both the waterfront and the city centre.
Liverpool ONE: retail therapy and rooftop drinks
If a bit of shopping is on the agenda, Liverpool ONE offers everything from big‑name brands to high‑street favourites in a bright, open‑air setting. It works brilliantly for a relaxed afternoon: a little retail therapy, a long lunch, then perhaps a rooftop bar to toast the day. Ideal for a girly weekend or a pre‑Christmas shopping break.
The Baltic Market & Baltic Triangle vibes
For something more urban and edgy, head to the Baltic Triangle. This once‑industrial area has transformed into one of Liverpool’s coolest quarters, full of street art, creative spaces and independent venues.
At its heart is the Baltic Market, a fantastic indoor food market with rotating street‑food traders, live music and a buzzy, laid‑back atmosphere. Think wood‑fired pizza, bao buns, loaded fries, cocktails and craft beer, all under one roof. It is casual, fun and perfect for groups or relaxed date nights.
Dining highlights: Ffrens Bistro, Nord & The Art School
Liverpool’s dining scene is full of character, and three names really stand out for a special evening:
Ffrens Bistro: A warm, welcoming spot that feels like you have stumbled upon a local secret. Expect comforting, well‑crafted dishes and friendly service, ideal for a relaxed yet memorable lunch or pop in on a Friday or Saturday evening for a glass of wine and some delicious snacks.
Nord: Contemporary, stylish and perfect if you love modern, seasonal cooking with a bit of flair. Great for pre‑theatre dining or a sophisticated night out with cocktails to match.
The Art School: For a true occasion, this is the one I would recommend. Housed in a beautiful building, The Art School offers fine dining with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Think tasting menus, an excellent wine list and gracious, attentive service. Perfect for anniversaries, birthdays or simply treating yourself.
Booking ahead is highly recommended for these, especially at weekends.
More ways to enjoy Liverpool
On top of your “musts”, there are plenty of extra touches that can turn a simple weekend into something really memorable:
Cathedrals & culture: Visit both Liverpool Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral to appreciate two very different yet equally striking architectural styles.
Live music & nightlife: From intimate gigs to lively bars, there is always something happening. A night in the Cavern Quarter is a real Liverpool experience.
Green spaces: If you need a breather from the buzz, head to Sefton Park for a peaceful stroll around the lake and Victorian palm house.
Football experiences: For fans, a stadium tour at Anfield or Goodison Park can be a real highlight of the trip.

It suits:
Couples looking for great food, culture and nightlife
Friends’ weekends with a mix of shopping, dining and music
Solo travellers who want a friendly, walkable city with plenty to do
If you would like to explore Liverpool for a night or two, or build it into a longer UK trip, I would be delighted to put together something tailored just for you.
